Once in a while, we look beyond our borders to discover what’s rocking up on the regional music front. Thankfully Impulse, brought to you by Heineken Music and our brotha’ Junk, makes the research a little easier by curating a list of performers and visual artists whose names we all should look out for. While the third edition of Impulse played to a fairly quiet crowd (drat that football match!), that hasn’t deterred the organizers from putting together Impulse number four!
Held at the swanky Heritage Mansion, the headliners this time around hails from the Philippines. Say mabuhay to Drip, a very unconventional band indeed. The members include Beng Calmheria-Alcazaren on vocals, Malek Lopez on keyboards, sound design and programming, Caliph8 on turntables and FX; and finally Ian “Morse” Magbanua on beats, sample and programming. While past Impulse headliners have fallen regularly into the indie rock variety, Drip will offer audiences something different with their brand of trip-hop. With a healthy following in their home country, Drip’s album Far Side of the World is a collection of dark, sensual and experimental tunes.
On the local front, we have a brand new band by the simple name of M. The duo consists of two of our scene’s leading ladies, namely Melina of Tempered Mental and Michelle of Milli’z, an acoustic act. Together, their musical direction veers off from what they’re typically associated with. M will be showcasing their own interpretation of electronica music, infused with a lot of melody and atmosphere.
Balancing in the newbies with the veterans, Impulse will also feature Altered Image who are renowned for their unique blend of live visuals and dance music. While usually a trio, Altered Image will be represented at Impulse by Callen of Excessive Records and Terence C, a resident at Zouk KL.
More visual wizardry will also come from The Hoo, the moniker of Danny Hoo. Having worked on a plethora of projects like the MVA Awards 2004, Nokia Creative Awards at Zouk 2005, Puteri Gunung Ledang: The Musical and P. Ramlee: The Musical, The Hoo brings his own exciting perspective to the table by creating visuals for each of the acts. Come witness for yourself the fruits of his labour.
