S.I.N

Review | Posted on 23 June 2008 by sarah

S.I.N sounds like the club your mother warned you about – S&M gear on the walls, vampires just about ready to jump you for a pint or two. In short, the name just screams shenanigans in dark, dank nooks and crannies. When we headed down for its grand launch, the location seemed to fit our preconceptions perfectly: hidden beneath a stairwell to the left of Jalan P Ramlee’s Modesto’s, our descent into S.I.N began.

The reality turned out to be a little bit different. In an attempt to give Frangipani a run for its money, Sin caters more to pink cowboys than to black-draped vamps. It is housed predominantly in white, black and red, with a dance floor illuminated in a spectrum of colours via a scattered disco balled ceiling and pulsing strobe. Two projectors simultaneously screen random music videos with choreography that surprisingly keep in time to the DJ’s frantic mixing. Seating is in abundance, with some flocking to the bar, high chairs surrounding the floor, and tables to sofa lounge that come in four. Towards the end was a secret bedding area skirted by veils of red chiffon, which can seem tacky in some cases, but nonetheless enveloped revellers intimately. Despite all this, the place did seem bare, but perhaps this is due to the club still being new and unfamiliar. We do however have beef with the restrooms, which are too dark for anything other than things you have no business doing in a restroom anyway. The dodge factor certainly seemed to inspire some women to hold it in until the after-party mamak session.

However, perhaps what S.I.N lacks in restrooms, it makes up in music and cocktails. Friday nights at S.I.N ease into the weekend with cocktail parties and resident DJ Vick C’s sexy house, Saturday nights host opportunities for hard partying with renowned Japanese DJ Shigeki Ho for a fun coagulation of house, tribal and electro. The cocktails concocted to compliment the beats were a mix of cheap quirky vulgarities. In-house speciality shooters including 1800 F*** You, Liquidation, Orgasm and Screaming Multiple Orgasm cost RM13 per pop, while standard cocktails go for RM25 per glass. House pour liqueurs are RM15 a glass. The burden of sin might be too much for mortal men to bear, but at S.I.N the drinks, at least, come cheap and guilt-free.
