Flower In The Pocket

They say ignorance is bliss and that’s probably why the two main characters Li Ohm and Li Ahh in Liew Seng Tat’s full length feature Flower In The Pocket (blessed with the Best New Filmmaker award at Pusan Film Festival this year) are happy trekking through piles of garbage, running around in storm drains and savouring the experience of eating a packet of KFC Tomato Sos. But such innocent happiness masks a somewhat more serious agenda.

The Farrelly Brothers have never really been known for being classy. But over the years, you could’ve said they have matured a little with offerings like Me, Myself and Irene and Stuck On You, which toned down the crass and exchanged it for a heartwarming tale of brotherhood. But alas, that is not the case with their latest release, a remake of the 1972 comedy.

Director Julie Taymor takes a bold step with Across The Universe. Of course, Taymor has never been one to shrink away from ambitious projects. Her past ones included an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Titus and she also brought to the screen the life of Frida Kahlo with commendable results. Across The Universe is bold in another realm altogether as Taymor borrows extensively from The Beatles for this project.
